Participatory design of biochar filters for onsite wastewater treatment
Biochar has shown great potential for environmental applications, including wastewater treatment and its production comprises a future technology for renewable energy and power production. However, design of biochar-based systems should carefully integrate technical perfromance with user, institutional and market requirement. This will increase chances for adoption and sustainability of the system. We are looking for a PhD student to explore the effectiveness of participatory design for the development of biochar filters as a system for onsite wastewater treatment in unsewered communities in Sweden. Mainly we look for a student who is interested in using participatory design approach to develop, test and optimise biochar-based filters and to assess their functional and operational bottlenecks and
Qualifications:The candidate should have a master degree in technology or engineering, with clear connection to wastewater treatment. The applicant should have the basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement. The applicant should have excellent skills of communication in English. The work involves communication with different actors related to storm water management. We put great emphasis on analytical and problem-solving ability, motivation, collaborative ability and ability to work independently
Place of work:Uppsala, Sweden
Forms for funding or employment:Employment as PhD student for 2 years. The aim of the employment is primarily a licentiate degree, but extension for another 2 years for a doctoral degree may become an option.
Starting date:According to agreement.
