Subject area

The research within the research group Horticultural production physiology is an important part of the research at the Department for Biosystems and Technology. Horticultural production is on the rise in Sweden and internationally. This is driven not least by consumers with increasing demand for vegetable food, preferably local, organically produced fruits and vegetables of high quality all year around. The research and teaching in the group is about conventional and organic production systems for field-, high tunnel- and greenhouse crops. The questions are related both to the established horticulture and to new cultures and new cultivation methods. In both research and teaching, collaboration with the industry is important, with the overall aim of contributing to the development of the horticultural industry towards increased production and sustainability. The teaching is conducted in English and Scandinavian languages at the undergraduate-, advanced- and research level.


The lecturer will conduct research and teach at all levels, as well as being a part of the development of the subject. There is a requirement for teaching in several different production systems and pedagogical development of the subject. The work also includes supervision of graduate-, master- and postgraduate students in horticultural science. The employment focus on horticultural production systems for food and different orientations towards vegetables, fruits, berries, etc. in field crops or in controlled climate are possible. During the first two years of employment, at least 50 % will be in undergraduate education.


The applicant shall
  • have a completed doctorate in horticulture, biology or equivalent
  • be a skilful scientist within the subject
  • be pedagogically skilled and have taken courses equivalent to at least 10 weeks full-time studies in university pedagogics, or otherwise acquired equivalent pedagogic skills

Assessment criteria

Assessment for the appointment will be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the skills to qualify for the position. The examination of the teaching proficiency is given the same attention as the examination of the scientific skills. Great emphasis will be on documented pedagogical skills and subject didactic experience as well as the ability to integrate pedagogy and science. A good knowledge of the Swedish horticulture industry and the ability to teach several different production areas is meritorious. It is desirable that the applicant has associate professor competence. In assessing the scientific skills, both earlier and ongoing research are taken into account, as well as the ability to independently initiate and conduct innovative research. Applicants are expected to have obtained external research grants in a relevant area. The applicant should be able to teach in a Scandinavian language (no later than after 2 years) and in English. Experience in modern teaching education, such as digital teaching methods and e-learning, is meritorious. The applicant shall present his / her pedagogical view and be able to demonstrate how this has been applied.
