We offer 24 month full time postdoctoral position within the research group led by Professor Michael Kann, Department of Infectious Diseases, Institute for Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The focus of the research group is the understanding how parvo- and hepatitis B viruses transport their genome into the nucleus. The newly created group consists of 1 professor, 1 engineer, and 1 technician, closely collaborating with the clinical virologists at the department and with cancer researchers. A PhD student is currently hired. The group has extensive collaboration with other international universities. The research is interdisciplinary at the interface between fundamental and clinical virology, and cell biology.
Subject area descriptionParvoviruses are not only pathogens of a variety of organisms but also used as therapeutic agents. E.g. parvovirus PVH-1 is used in clinical trial for treatment of glioblastoma. Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) are a major platform in gene therapy. All parvoviruses have in common that they are very inefficient and hundreds of viral particles are needed for infection/transduction.
Our group thus likes understanding this obstacle, which is linked to parvovirus intracellular trafficking. A better knowledge about the underlying molecular mechanisms will thus help improving gene therapy and cancer treatment.
Job assignmentsThe postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research with the aim of identifying the molecular mechanisms and factors involved in parvovirus trafficking and genome release. It is expected that the successful candidate participates also in hepatitis B virus research, in which similar techniques are used. The project is largely based on fluorescence microscopy of living cells and FACS analysis. Techniques of molecular biology as e.g. Western blot, PCR, virus and protein purification by affinity columns and ultracentrifugation are needed for verification of microscopical results. The work also includes authoring/co-authoring scientific publications and presenting research at international scientific conferences.
EligibilityAn achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

AssessmentPhD in relevant area, as well as excellent scientific production in relation to the time passed since completing PhD are required. A high degree of independence including extensive experience of practical molecular and microbiological analyses with the techniques indicated (confocal fluorescence microscopy, FACS), experience in virus entry using these techniques, previous international postdoc experience, excellent communicative skills including fluent verbal and written scientific English, experience from working at differerent labs and abilty to work successfully are all additional qualifying criteria.

EmploymentThe employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
