The Department of Plant Breeding conducts research, education and innovational work of strategic importance for the society’s long-term sustentation of provisions, industrial raw material and energy. At the same time we strive to meet the increasing need of raw material and at the same time make the plant production more and more environment-friendly. The department operates partly at the SLU campus in Alnarp, outside of Malmö and partly at the SLU property Balsgård, outside of Kristianstad. As an integrated part of the work, the department also conducts plant breeding programs concerning apple, black currant, sea buckthorn and potatoes.
Studies of lipid metabolism for the elucidation of genetic and enzymatic effects on plant oil composition
We are now looking for a qualified candidate for a PostDoc position for 2 years at the Division for Plant Biotechnology.
Duties:The research of the PostDoc position will be focused on the modification and understanding of lipid biosynthesis in wildtype Camelina sativa and Brassica napus as well as in plants with stable integration of gene constructs that are expected to alter fatty acid and lipid composition. The project will also include work with yeast as a model organism to study the function of enzymes related to lipid biosynthesis in plants. Tasks also include managing and taking care of transgenic plants.
Qualifications:Doctoral degree in natural sciences with specialization in plant science, bioscience or equivalent is a requirement. Applicants should be able to show experience and scientific skills of research on the metabolism and study of fatty acids and lipids by applying plant physiological / biochemical / molecular biological methods. Documented experience in studies of oil storage in sink tissue and analyzes of lipid composition and quality are a merit. Also stable transformation of oil plant such as Camelina sativa and work with yeast is a merit. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Good collaboration skills, initiative and creativity are important as the work is done in a research group and in close collaboration with other research staff within the department, at SLU and nationally and internationally.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
