Where knowledge grows.
We are an international university in Småland, Sweden. Together we set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development.

This position is based at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science. The research profile at this department is multidisciplinary and includes e.g. aquatic ecology, cell- and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, zoonotic ecology and epidemiology, environmental science, climate research, environmental chemistry, environmental risk assessment and paleoecology.

Context of position:

The working tasks consist mainly of research within geochemistry/geobiology. In your job you are expected to actively participate in the department's environment and network both internally and externally.

The aim of this postdoc project is to investigate biosignatures and low-temperature processes in subsurface environments (the deep biosphere of fractured continental rock and marine environments) with emphasis on isotopic biosignatures of ancient and modern microbial activity of methanotrophs, sulfate reducers and methanogens. The postdoc will be mostly dedicated, but not exclusively, to ongoing projects at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University, such as “Characteristics and extent of microbial anaerobic methane oxidation and sulfate reduction in the deep terrestrial subsurface over geological time scales” and related studies. The work will involve practical activities, fieldwork (of drill cores, waters, gases), laboratory work (analyses and experiments) and modelling.

Qualification requirements:

Qualified for appointment is the one who holds a PhD in Geosciences, Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Microbiology, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD, and who have completed their degree no more than seven years before the application deadline.

To be eligible for this position is also required to have
  • documented experience of analytical and conceptual modelling work in geochemistry/geobiology,
  • a high proficiency in written and spoken English,
  • the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.

Meriting for this position is also

  • experience of analytical protocols and sample preparation for studies of preserved ancient biosignatures (particularly isotope analysis, both using is situ and bulk sample techniques) and related interpretation,
  • previous documented deep biosphere research experience, particularly of ancient systems, is particularly valuable,
  • the ability to solve difficult problems.
