Position description

The School of Business, Society and Engineering (EST) has one PhD student opening for candidates with a background in Business Administration, in particularly management control and management accounting, as part of its research strategy aimed at supporting Mälardalen University in strengthening its leading role in the area of sustainability. Sustainability should, in this context, be understood broadly, as including, but not limited to, issues concerning migration, class, gender, diversity, ethnic and spatial segregation, social and political aspects of infrastructural change, citizenship, education, social responsibility of business, use of local resources, and sustainable governance among others.

The empirical work of the PhD student will be mainly focused on studying sustainability and explore relationships with other ongoing processes of management control and management accounting for example the digitalization of public organizations, business, and policy. The study of sustainability in relation to management control and strategy work and sustainability accounting are especially interesting. As PhD student you may also benefit from Mälardalen university’s possibility to apply for an association with the national graduate school in management and IT, which will offer some of the doctoral courses you may take as well as give you the possibility to join a unique network of PhD students and researchers. As a new PhD student, you will become part of a lively research environment conducting a number of projects on sustainability in relation to other themes with special regard to digitalization and internationalization, and in collaboration with international, national, and regional organizations. More information on the research in Industrial economics and organization can be found on University’s webpage under the heading “Research”.

Within the framework described above, the PhD student and supervisors will discuss possible interesting areas of research. Therefore, the PhD student:
  • is expected to work with scholarly literature concerning sustainability and business administration – as it will be defined later within the research proposal - in relation to management control and/or management accounting questions;
  • is expected to collaborate with other research projects on sustainability or other relevant research projects conducted at EST-Mälardalen University as well as with other Swedish and foreign universities;
In addition, the doctoral student is expected to have good written and oral knowledge in English. Knowledge of the Swedish language is a requirement.

The employment starts at the beginning of October or by agreement.

The position may include teaching or administrative duties up to 20% of a fulltime position in addition to the time for completing the PhD program, which is 4 fulltime years.

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).

The selection criteria are based upon the ability of the candidate to undertake PhD education within the area. Earlier study results, research merits, the quality of previous scientific or investigation work carried out by the applicant will therefore be taken into account. The applicant's relevant work experience, as it relates to the ability to undertake PhD education, will also be considered.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

For the position, a master degree in Business Administration with focus on management control and management accounting studies is a strong merit.
