The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology was founded in the late 1970s - when the College of Forestry moved to Umeå. The number of employees has since grown steadily is now around 100, including postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. In the late 1990s it was decided to join with the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University to form a research center, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology moved into the premises adjacent to the partner department and together have developed a close and successful collaboration on research issues, technology platforms, and training of master's and doctoral level students. The international element within UPSC is large, with over 40 nationalities represented.

The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level.

The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with the Department of Plant Physiology.

Sustainable forest regeneration in a changing climate
Description:
In sustainable forestry, successful forest regeneration is key for the continued desirable stand development. The current climate change creates new challenges for forest regeneration with potential large variation in weather during the seedling establishment phase. New forest regeneration systems need to be developed, and an exciting development is currently under way, transferring new basic knowledge into efficient regeneration systems. The methods include modification of seedlings’ growth conditions to meet the variable growth environment. The knowledge we in this project intend to transform into practical methods involves, for example, how forest plants interact with the surrounding soil environment and its microorganisms, how different environmental factors control the establishment of tree seedlings and how climate change can affect the conditions for forest regeneration in different parts of Sweden.

The objectives of the project are to compare new forest regeneration systems with the traditional ones, to transform new knowledge about tree seedlings’ nutrient uptake into practice and to develop more robust regeneration methods to meet the challenges of the changing climate.

The experimental part of the work will involve inventory and sampling in the field across Sweden. Since field tests have been on-going for several years the availability of field data will be substantial and the application of advanced statistical methods will be required for data analyzes. The work involves many contacts with researchers in nearby disciplines and with activities in practical forestry.

The position is funded at the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The doctoral candidate will participate in the research school "Forest Genetics, Biotechnology and Tree Breeding" and be part of an industrial project in cooperation with Sveaskog AB.

Qualifications:

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a good foundation in statistics and preferably have proven experience with R. A basic prerequisite is that the candidate is proficient in English in both speech and writing and has the ability to work independently and in groups.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.
