1 PhD position on Machine Learning for Coaching Robots.
This position is funded by the Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP, wasp-sweden.org), a major Swedish national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment in autonomous systems and software development, with the ambition to advance Sweden into an internationally recognized and leading position in these areas.
The research topic for this PhD position is to devise and implement new artificial intelligence-based systems for companion robots. The robots are aimed to coach people in order to improve their mental well-being and their quality of life. Example coaching activities include suggesting music to relax, calling a friend, waking up on time, etc. The robot should look for the best moment to intervene during the daily activities of people. Therefore, a key component will be the long-term learning of activities of daily life of people through pro-active perception and interaction with the user, with main focus on machine learning algorithms. Additional capabilities of the companion robot include navigation, people detection, planning, and human-robot interaction among others.
Target populations of this system include elderly people living independently, and people at risk of developing negative mental states (stress, anxiety, and depression), among others.
The PhD candidate is expected to collaborate with other lab members working in related topics, and to have an open attitude toward multi-disciplinary research and toward working with end-users.

The programmeThe successful candidate is offered a place on the research study programme concluding with the Degree of Doctor. The programme comprises 240 credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. Extensions to the study period are granted for instance to compensate for any sick leave and parental leave.

Doctoral studentshipsThe position is offered as a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme. Duties such as teaching, administration and research other than the student’s own thesis project may be included, however with no more than 20 per cent of a full-time post. To compensate for time spent on such duties, extensions to the programme length and funding period will be granted. The initial salary for a doctoral studentship is 26 900 SEK per month.
