The doctoral project is a collaboration between SLU and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) and is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. You will be employed two years at RISE and two years at SLU, while you are enrolled as a research student at the Department of Energy and Technology, SLU. The goal of the employment is a doctorate.
SLU have collaborated with RISE for several decades on R&D of biogas production. We offer a stimulating research environment on Ultuna campus, Uppsala, with extensive expertise in process technology, microbiology and energy systems.
Biological methanation of syngasDescription
We are looking for a research student who will work on the biological conversion of syngas to methane in laboratory scale and evaluate the process with regard to microbiological and technical performance.
Thermal gasification of biomass is a technology with a large production potential for biofuels in the transport sector. The produced syngas (CO, H2, CO2) can be converted to methane (CH4) via three types of anaerobic microbes (acetogens, hydrogenotrophic methanogens and acetotrophic methanogens). The trickle bed rector (TBR) is a reactor concept that is based on sprinkling a nutrient solution over carriers with active microbes, which facilitates mass transfer between gas, nutrient solution and microbes.
The research studies include evaluation of the composition of nutrients and syngas as well as the flow of syngas and nutrient solution in TBR with respect to methane production and the microbial function/diversity, in order to achieve a stable and efficient process. You will participate in the planning and be responsible for the operation and monitoring of the process, conduct chemical and microbiological analyzes, compile and interpret results for scientific publication and presentation.
QualificationsDegree at advanced level in natural science, technology or engineering with specialization in biotechnology, biochemistry or microbiology. Knowledge and experimental experience of anaerobic process technology, microbiology and molecular techniques are considered as a merit. The holder of the position must be able to communicate well in English (written and spoken). Ability to also communicate in Swedish is a merit, but no absolute requirement. We put great emphasis on analytical and problem-solving ability, motivation, collaborative ability and ability to work independently.
Forms for employmentEmployment as a doctoral student for 4 years full time (100 %), where employment begins with 2 years at RISE and then continues with 2 years at the Department of Energy and Technology, SLU.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
