The Faculty of engineering consists of nine departments covering different disciplines within technology, where Linnaeus University conducts education and research.

The department of mechanical engineering has two programs at Bachelor level, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering, and one program at master level, simulation driven product development. An additional master program in industrial engineering is currently under development. Furthermore, the department has a PhD program in mechanical engineering. The department is part of the research environment advanced materials which has a focus on challenges related to sustainable production within a broad perspective which include a life cycle perspective, product development, manufacturing, operation and maintenance, and reuse of products, components and materials.

The department of mechanical engineering is currently carrying out research within areas such as engineering mechanics and structural dynamics, operation and maintenance of machines and systems, and production. Research is carried out in close collaboration with other departments, universities and industry.

This includes formulation and development of constitutive models, implementation of models in finite element codes, analyses of homogenized behavaiour of representative volume elements, fracture mechanics analyses, etc.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote working hours to his/her own research studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration at the university. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Qualification requirements

The Higher Education Ordinance stipulates that for applicants for admission to research education, it is required that the applicant
  • been awarded a degree on second-cycle level,
  • completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 ECTS, of which 60 ECTS on second-cycle level, or
  • in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Specific prerequisites for admission to graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering are required:
  • a minimum of 90 higher education credits in the subject Mechanical Engineering or in subjects related to the doctoral level studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad, and
  • a good command of English.

Assessment criteria

The selection of candidates is made with regard to the applicant’s ability to successfully complete and benefit from their studies at the graduate level. The assessment especially takes into account:
  • Academic skills documented in scientific works, especially focused on the quality of the essays at the undergraduate level, any advanced work and other scientific or scholarly works..
  • Knowledge and skills relevant to the PhD work and the subject of study.
  • Other experiences relevant to PhD education, e.g. work experience.
The assessment also takes into account breadth and composition of the undergraduate degree as well as the picture which the intended principal academic supervisor, examiner, and other colleagues in the research group and the subject obtained of the applicant’s potential.
